People have to start from the ground, then first step, second, third and so on to reach their destination floor. Exactly the same way students have to start from Kindergarten, then grade one, grade two and three and so on to reach their math destination. Also, if some of the steps are broken in the staircase, it is still hard to reach the desired floor using those steps. Same way, if you are missing some of the basic concepts from elementary grades, math for you is still hard. Now, the kindergarten, first grade and second grade are like first couple of the steps of the stairs. You can learn this level of math easily, as you can jump enough to take yourself to second or third step of the stairs easily. As it is very hard to reach sixth or seventh step of a stairs by jumping from the ground, exactly the same way to learn grade five or higher grade math is very hard (or impossible) without having the good knowledge of the kindergarten to grade three or grade four math.

There are many math-based games available in educational toy stores that will help to reinforce the principles your child learns in worksheets. Computer games can help too, but depending on the age of your child, it is best not to encourage too much computer use at an early age. Everyday activities can be turned into math lessons too. A trip to the grocery store can turn into a math lesson if you encourage your child to help you count how many items you are buying, or add up the bottles of milk as you add them to your cart.

A lot of math students find equations, probability and algebra difficult to grasp. With probability for example, students find it bewildering taking in the concepts of probability and chance, as well as statistical inference and analysis. Imagine a child not fully understanding this topic in the class setting and then being given 6th grade math probability homework sheets. They would be completely overwhelmed. Now, imagine the same child having access to an online math learning environment. By paying a monthly subscription, sometimes as little as $20 a month, your child will immediately have access to a system where expert tutors will explain these math topics in an engaging and easy to understand way. If you child didn‘t fully understand the first time they watched an online tutorial, they can watch it over and over again.

Knowing that the 6th grade math curriculum is based on essential math concepts such as arithmetic and data analysis, measurement, geometry, probability amongst other things, having access to math worksheets which are also accompanied by other interactive activities like learning games, assessments and reinforcement can make learning 6th grade math a lot more fun than learning by rote.

We can all remember learning our times-tables at school - one times one is one, two times two is four, and so on - but there was a reason why we learnt this way, because it works. But it‘s not just about learning the times tables in sequence through repetition, it‘s important to get kids practicing with varying levels of multiplication problem. Working through problems and then checking the answers afterwards is a simple way to practice multiplying numbers.

As a math tutor for 15 years, I have tutored hundreds of students from all the grade levels. I found most of the students were not comfortable with mathematics. More than 80% of them said, ”the mathematics is very hard.” Why do most of the students find mathematics a hard subject and try to avoid it? The answer for the above question is hidden in a simple example. I always give the example of stairs to my students, and giving the same example in this article. I compare the steps of a staircase to the concepts in mathematics. As this is very hard to reach higher floors of a building without stairs (or elevators these days), same way learn higher concepts in mathematics without learning basic concepts is very hard.
