Today we all know that benefits of math are considerable. Math is not a subject one learns by reading the problems and solutions. American children have very little practice with multi-step problems, and very few opportunities to think their way in to and through problems that don‘t look like ‘all the others‘. With a packed curriculum and the increased emphasis on testing, our children are taught tons of procedures - but procedures disconnected from when to use them, and why. Sustained thinking - the key ingredient to math success - is painfully absent in too many math classes.

A good set of kids math worksheets will present math in an exciting way, incorporating lessons of quantity, counting and writing numbers in a way that children understand and relate to. Mathematics worksheets should use different methods to teach your child the principles of addition and subtraction to make sure they understand the concept, not just learn the answers by rote. A decent set of worksheets will use step-by-step methods to help your child progress from the first steps in number recognition and counting, to more complicated sums and word problems.

When a child learns to relate math to everyday questions, he will be great at it from the simplest addition all the way to trigonometry. To convert percentages, decimals and fractions is thus one essential skill. How much of an apple pie has been eaten? The answer to this question can be expressed in percentages, 50%; or in decimals, 0.5; or in fraction, ½. In other words, half of mom‘s delicious apple pie is gone. How many kids in school have done their homework? Again this can be answered in several ways: in percentages, 70%; or in ratio, 7:10; Both of these mean out of ten kids in class there are seven good ones who did and three not-so-good ones who didn‘t. The bottom line is that kids learn math much better when it makes sense.

Use heart-shaped candy to teach the more simple mathematical arithmetic; like addition and subtraction. Provide children with pre-determined math problems that they can figure out using the sweets. Alternatively, make heart-shaped numeral cards that children can arrange on their desk to solve a math problem. You could give them a total to reach and they must use the cards to create the question.

We can all remember learning our times-tables at school - one times one is one, two times two is four, and so on - but there was a reason why we learnt this way, because it works. But it‘s not just about learning the times tables in sequence through repetition, it‘s important to get kids practicing with varying levels of multiplication problem. Working through problems and then checking the answers afterwards is a simple way to practice multiplying numbers.

Now, consider one person is jumping on the ground to reach the third floor of a building. Can this person make it? Never, if he is not Spiderman. For this person, to reach the third floor by jumping is impossible or very hard and finally he gave up saying that it was very hard to reach third floor. But another person used the stairs to reach the same floor. This person found it very easy and reach there with little effort. Compare this person to a student who knows all the basic concepts learned in elementary grades. To learn grade six or grade seven math for this student will be easy. But there is another student in grade six and doesn‘t know the lower grade math concepts such as, times tables, factors or number system. This student is in the same situation as the person, who is jumping to reach third floor from the ground level.
