It goes without saying that parents need to be involved in their children‘s education. The learning that takes place at home is every bit as important as the learning that takes place at school. With math, this can be as easy as going over homework with your child, encouraging them when they get right answers, and helping them understand where they made a mistake when they get an answer wrong. Through seeing the importance you place on their math education, your child will understand that their learning is important to you.
As a math tutor for 15 years, I have tutored hundreds of students from all the grade levels. I found most of the students were not comfortable with mathematics. More than 80% of them said, ”the mathematics is very hard.” Why do most of the students find mathematics a hard subject and try to avoid it? The answer for the above question is hidden in a simple example. I always give the example of stairs to my students, and giving the same example in this article. I compare the steps of a staircase to the concepts in mathematics. As this is very hard to reach higher floors of a building without stairs (or elevators these days), same way learn higher concepts in mathematics without learning basic concepts is very hard.
Many online learning environments have examples that tutors will go through and also give you some example to go through at your own pace, so that you can complement your child‘s learning. For many parents, having access to an online learning system to help their child with math is a lot more cost-effective than getting a personal math tutor.
Further, students feel baffled on seeing lots of mathematical sums heaped upon them and treat them as chores. In their confused state of mind, they do not choose the right formulas for the sums and get stuck very often in their assignments. Students also need good problem solving strategies to cope with Math sums at the high school level. Math libraries, assignment help websites, Math help sheets, solved examples online, Math online calculators and Math forums come to the rescue of students when they try to solve assignment sums in high school Math. Online problem solving tools are also highly helpful in this category. Students also seek answers to their problems through Math worksheets that are available online with questions and answers.
When a child learns to relate math to everyday questions, he will be great at it from the simplest addition all the way to trigonometry. To convert percentages, decimals and fractions is thus one essential skill. How much of an apple pie has been eaten? The answer to this question can be expressed in percentages, 50%; or in decimals, 0.5; or in fraction, ½. In other words, half of mom‘s delicious apple pie is gone. How many kids in school have done their homework? Again this can be answered in several ways: in percentages, 70%; or in ratio, 7:10; Both of these mean out of ten kids in class there are seven good ones who did and three not-so-good ones who didn‘t. The bottom line is that kids learn math much better when it makes sense.
The importance of teaching our children math simply can‘t be underestimated. Basic math skills such as understanding addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, and percentages are all basic life skills. We use these skills every day, often without even thinking about it. The question, then, isn‘t why our children should learn math, but what we can do to help them learn. Children need our encouragement. They need the help and guidance of family members. They also need numerous opportunities to practice.
